Fool’s Hill: The Meaning “Why!” from Dr. Ron Cubit is the memoir of a motivated man who never allowed his challenges to define him.
Dr. Ron Cubit, an African-American US Marines veteran, a professor, and now an author, has completed his book Fool’s Hill: The Meaning “Why!” an inspirational retelling of hardships including spiritual trials and tribulations, nearly crippling overconsumption of alcohol, and the moments in his life in which he decided that he would not fall victim to his surroundings.
“As a child, I was labeled a ‘disadvantaged African-American’ young person,” Dr. Cubit said of his upbringing. After dropping out of high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps, but even the military did not place him on an easy path. “After facing personal challenges, including divorce, I separated myself from everyone. During this period of isolation, I discovered my love for the outdoors, especially backpacking – which many African Americans do not partake. Eventually, I reconnected with everyone – a new man.”
Dr. Ron Cubit’s memoir intends to separate itself from others in the sense that it follows an individual who is not a celebrity but is a successful African-American who transitioned from an inner-city life that seemed doomed from the start, into a professional educator whose life goal is to help others.
Dr. Cubit’s coming-of-age coincides with the American Civil Rights Movement, and as such, each of his accomplishments is tinged with historical significance. The book is a precursor to the Black Lives Matter movement and was released just before the events that took place leading to the death of many African Americans. The book also expresses similar struggles African American males face when transitioning from challenging social conditions to that of a professional in government and industry.
